Hutt City Council's Civic Buildings are to undergo major earthquake strengthening work by 2015.

Mayor Ray Wallace says the buildings currently do not comply with building standards, and need to be made stronger to save lives in the event of a quake.

He says the cost is likely to be high, but the work is essential.

"We are talking about tens of millions. We've established a working group that will now go away and bring back to council the full amount. But we're probably talking in the region of $25 million."

Mayor Wallace says ratepayers won't foot the bill, with the Council instead looking at increasing its debt levels to cover the cost.

He says strengthening the buildings is not only about protecting those inside, but also providing a viable base for recovery operations, should a major earthquake hit.

This just reinforces my push for Lower and Upper Hutt cities to amalgamate, something that should have been done in 1989 during all the other compulsory amalgamations around New Zealand.

There is another push coming from Wellington City interests, and probably Upper Hutt as well, for a Wellington Super City, which does not benefit the Hutt Valley cities and residents.

I will be testing the waters soon for support of a 'One Hutt Valley' as opposed to a Wellington Super City.

Watch this space in future. Please comment here if you support amalgamation of the Hutt Valley cities and an alternative for Lower Hutt's civic buildings.

The car's pc runs a series of regimen exams and monitors the engine. At$50-$100 OBD-II scanners are definitely perfectly truly worth acquiring.
